How Much Does a Wall Plug Carry?

What books and binders on a board weigh, how many wall mounts a wall shelf gets, what that means per plug, and what a plug holds in concrete, brick and plasterboard according to its manufacturer.

Whether the wall holds is decided by the load on each individual plug, and that depends on what sits on the boards, how many mounts carry it and what the wall is made of. We work it through here once, with the figures from our own measurements and the load table of a plug manufacturer.

The weight on the board

A KUUDU board carries 20 kilograms. What that means in books we have weighed: 37 paperbacks on one board weigh 11 kilograms, 24 non-fiction books 13, 22 academic books exactly 20. Art books are the case where the limit comes before the space runs out: twelve per board, no more. With binders it is similar, eight fit side by side, but full ones weigh 28 kilograms, so it stays at five. The shelf itself is added on top, but the books decide the total.

For the calculation we take a wall shelf 150 centimetres wide, two sections, three boards per section, about 57 centimetres tall. At full capacity six times 20, so 120 kilograms, hang on it. With paperbacks it is 66. Most living rooms lie between them.

The number of mounts

At KUUDU the number of mounts is set by the parts list: a wall shelf gets one wall mount per post up to 80 centimetres of height and one more for every further 80 centimetres, each with a plug and a screw in the box. Our example has four posts and is lower than 80 centimetres, so four mounts. The same width at 123 centimetres of height would have eight.

If the load is shared evenly, each of the four mounts carries a quarter: at 120 kilograms 30 per plug, at 66 kilograms 16.5. On the 123-centimetre shelf with eight mounts it is 15 and 8.3. That number belongs next to the manufacturer's table.

The manufacturer's table

Now the other side. For its universal plug DuoPower 8 x 40, fischer states as the maximum load: 110 kilograms in concrete, 62 in solid brick, 25 in perforated brick, 10 in aerated concrete, 15 in a single 12.5-millimetre plasterboard. For plasterboard the same manufacturer recommends toggle anchors; its DuoTec carries 20 to 51 kilograms there according to its guide, depending on the board thickness. These are the maximum loads recommended by the manufacturer, and they apply to a cleanly drilled hole of the stated diameter.

In concrete and solid brick the sum works out with any universal plug, even at full capacity. In perforated brick, aerated concrete and plasterboard it does not work out with the universal plug, and not even with paperbacks: 16.5 kilograms per plug against 15 kilograms of maximum load. Then the plug the manufacturer intends for that wall helps, or the screw into the stud behind the board; fewer books are no solution. What you can change

The number of mounts grows with height. A wall shelf with four posts has four plugs; a taller one gets a second mount per post from 80 centimetres, and then the same load is shared by eight. So a wall shelf 123 centimetres tall loads the wall less per plug than one 57 centimetres tall with the same contents. The second factor is the contents. If you are hanging on a weak wall, take half boards where they suit: paperbacks, glasses and spices stand on 15 centimetres, and art books and binders stay with the standing shelf. What fits on which depth is in the article on shelf depth. And the hole: drilled to the stated diameter, not wider, because the manufacturer's figures apply only to that.
