How Safe Are Free-Standing Shelves?

A KUUDU stands on its own, as a room divider even in the middle of the room. Two numbers decide how safely it stands, the pull at the top edge and the tipping angle, and both are in your hands: through height, loading and, where needed, an end wall or the ceiling.

A KUUDU stands. As a room divider it stands in the middle of the room with no wall behind it, and that is what it is built for: 35 centimetres deep, an adjustable foot screw under every post, and a grid in which the heavy things can go low. How safely it stands can be worked out: from the height follows how much pull at the top edge knocks it over, from the loading how far it may lean before it falls.

The accident figures

The most thorough running count of accidents is kept by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. Its report of February 2024 puts the annual average at 17,800 injuries from tipped televisions, appliances and furniture, 82 percent of them furniture, and 217 deaths between 2013 and mid-2023, 155 of them children. Of the children treated after a piece of furniture tipped, 38 percent had pulled over a table, 28 percent a chest of drawers, 16 percent a shelf. As causes the report names small footprints, top-heaviness, sloping or soft floors, heavy things at the top and open drawers. An open shelf has no drawers. What remains of the list is footprint, loading and floor, and those three can be calculated.

The pull at the top edge

A piece of furniture tips as soon as the pull at the top times its height becomes greater than its total weight times half the footprint. On a KUUDU the posts stand two centimetres behind the board edge, so at 35 centimetres of depth the support lines are 31 centimetres apart and half the footprint measures 15.5. At 129 centimetres of height, five boards, 15.5 divided by 129 is 0.12: a horizontal pull of twelve percent of the total weight at the top edge tips it. At 182 centimetres it is 8.5 percent, at 49 centimetres a third.

The centre of gravity does not appear in this calculation, but the weight does. Twelve percent of 50 kilograms is six kilograms of pull, twelve percent of 150 kilograms is 18. A full room divider is therefore harder to tip than an empty one, and the empty shelf on the day you build it is the most tip-prone it will ever be. That is the first reason to fill it straight away.

The tipping angle

The second number describes the bump, the sloping floorboards, the child standing on the front of a board. A piece of furniture falls as soon as its centre of gravity moves past the front support line, and how far it has to lean for that depends on how high the centre of gravity sits. With 15.5 centimetres of half footprint and a centre of gravity at 49 centimetres that is 17.6 degrees; you would have to lift one side of the shelf a good nine centimetres. At 117 centimetres of centre-of-gravity height it is 7.6 degrees and four centimetres. Same height, same weight, half the reserve.

Where the centre of gravity sits is decided by the loading. We worked it through for a room divider with five boards and 129 centimetres, with 50 kilograms of contents, which is two and a half full boards. With 20 kilograms on the lowest board, 20 on the second and 10 on the third, the centre of gravity sits at 49 centimetres. Spread the same 50 kilograms evenly and it rises to 83; put the heavy things at the top and it reaches 117. The shelf itself is added on top; it does not change the order.

Filling a room divider needs no more rule than this: heavy things low, and really low. The KUUDU box in the lowest 35 bay is built for that; it gathers what would look restless in an open bay, and with its contents it weighs where weight helps the shelf. Books belong on the lower three boards, vases and pictures at the top. And because a room divider has two sides, it is loaded from both; the centre of gravity then stays in the middle of the 35 centimetres, where it belongs.

How a room divider stands

The simplest lever is height. The room divider on our application page is 105 centimetres tall, hip height, and needs 15 percent of its weight as pull. The sight-line logic in the article on room dividers lands between 110 and 150 centimetres anyway: tall enough to separate zones, low enough to see over when standing. In that band a loaded shelf stands free with a good tipping angle. Add the ballast from above. If you place the divider with one end against the wall, you secure it there with the wall fixing from the box, and the division of the room stays what it is. And for anything above 155 centimetres that is to stand in the middle of the room, there is the ceiling: KUUDU ceiling shelves run their posts up to the ceiling, the fixing is included, and a shelf held at the top and the bottom no longer tips.

The standard and the box

Storage furniture for the home and kitchen in Europe is covered by DIN EN 14749, edition July 2022. It knows two routes: either the furniture passes the tipping test free-standing, fully loaded, with a defined force, as TÜV Thüringen describes the test, or the manufacturer supplies a wall fixing and declares it necessary. At KUUDU the wall fixing comes in the box with every shelf taller than 60 centimetres, with plug and screw. If the shelf stands against a wall, it belongs mounted, and the question is settled. One exception remains, and it is not a matter of calculation: the child's room. Children pull, and they climb, and a board at 50 centimetres is a step. There the shelf stands against the wall, secured, with the heavy things low; a low shelf that grows with the child is the better choice in the first years than a tall one.
