Vinyl is one of the most durable audio formats ever made, and one of the easiest to ruin on a shelf. The failure modes are slow: a lean that becomes a warp over two years, a warm wall that softens a stack of sleeves, a bottom row carrying more weight than the board was built for. The good news is that record archives have written down exactly how to avoid all of it, and none of it requires special furniture.
The reference here is the preservation guidance of the Library of Congress, which stores millions of grooved discs and publishes its rules openly. What follows is that guidance, translated into living-room decisions.
Upright, straight, and supported
Records are stored standing on edge – never flat in stacks, and never leaning. A flat stack concentrates pressure unevenly and traps the lowest discs under kilograms of weight. A lean does something subtler: it puts steady sideways stress on the disc inside the sleeve, and over months that stress becomes a warp that no cleaning will fix.
The practical consequence is that rows should be full enough to hold each other upright, or divided into short runs with support. If a row is half empty, add a bookend or divide the run so records stand vertically. Tight is wrong too: you should be able to pull a record without dragging its neighbours. Archives aim for firm but browsable.

The climate question
The Library of Congress recommends around 18 to 21 °C and 40 to 50 percent relative humidity for discs, and notes that sudden changes are more damaging than a consistently slightly warm room. Translated: the living room is fine, the attic and the basement usually are not, and the spot directly above a radiator is the worst place in the flat. Direct sunlight adds UV and heat at once, which is why record walls belong on the window-free side of the room.
Sleeves matter more than most furniture decisions. Paper inner sleeves shed fibres and scratch; polyethylene-lined inners are the standard recommendation. The outer jacket does the mechanical protection, so records go back into their jackets after playing, not into the gap on top of the row.
The weight nobody calculates
Here is the number that surprises people: archived LPs weigh roughly 35 to 45 pounds per shelf-foot, which is 50 to 65 kilograms per metre of tightly packed records. Vinyl is dense, and it concentrates its weight along the centre line of the board. Shelving that happily carries a metre of paperbacks can sag or fail under the same metre of records.
So before buying or building, do the arithmetic. A record with its jacket weighs around 250 to 320 grams. On a board rated for 20 kg, the KUUDU value per 75 cm board, that means roughly 60 to 80 records per level, which is a comfortably filled row rather than a compressed archive. A serious collection simply takes more levels, and it belongs on the lower ones: weight low keeps tall furniture calm, and your back will approve the day you rearrange.
Singles and 10-inch records follow the same rules at smaller measures: a 7-inch sleeve stands about 18 cm, so a paperback-height gap of 25 cm stores them upright with air, ideally in their own short run with a support so they don't hide between LPs. Shellac 78s, if you inherit any, are heavier and far more brittle than vinyl and deserve their own supported section.
Handling is the last piece of preservation, and the cheapest. Discs are held at the edge and the label, never on the groove surface; dust comes off with a carbon-fibre brush along the groove before playing; and a record goes back into its inner sleeve immediately after the side ends. Cleaning liquids are for actual dirt, not routine – most damage attributed to dust is really damage from fingers and leaning.
