IKEA Billy Alternative: KUUDU Compared

  • 75 × 178 × 35 cm
  • FSC oak
  • Made in Germany
  • Configurable in 3D
Building

Billy is probably the most-owned bookcase in the world, in the range since 1979 and the first shelf in countless homes. It does its job without fuss: 80 centimetres wide, shelves on pin holes, up in an afternoon. Many people asking for a Billy alternative are not unhappy with theirs – they've outgrown it and want the next shelf to be the last one.

Modular oak bookshelf — KUUDU Standing Shelf H1 in the KUUDU modular shelving system

The configuration shown is one section (75 cm) at about 180 cm height with varied gap heights and a single closed box. Oak veneer (FSC European) on powder-coated aluminium: the posts carry 20 kg per board, the surface comes oiled and open-pored, and the build stays open on all sides – no back panel between the books and the wall.

The difference shows over years rather than at first glance. The 75 cm grid extends sideways up to 450 cm, levels and gap heights re-arrange per section, and the same parts rebuild when the shelf moves homes. The 3D configurator shows price and dimensions live; made in Germany.

FAQ

What does the step up from a fixed bookcase change?

A fixed bookcase has one footprint and one future. A modular system re-arranges: levels and gap heights are chosen per 75 cm section, sections attach later, and the same parts rebuild into a different shelf when the room changes.

How much weight do the boards carry?

Each board is rated for 20 kg across its 75 cm span – a full row of hardcovers. The load runs through powder-coated aluminium posts rather than the shelf sides.

Is there a back panel?

No. KUUDU builds open, so the wall stays part of the room and the shelf works freestanding or wall-hung. Single cells can be built as closed boxes where things should sit quietly.
