How Does a Shelf Fit Under a Sloped Ceiling?

The space under the slope barely counts as living area. A shelf wins it back when every section gets its own height, on the gable wall as on the knee wall.

The space under a sloped ceiling is the cheapest in the house. Under Germany's living-area regulation, floor area with less than two metres of headroom counts only half, and below one metre it does not count at all. That is exactly where most attic flats keep nothing, because no off-the-shelf unit fits there. Yet the task is simple geometry: the ceiling drops evenly, so the shelf has to as well.

With KUUDU that works without anything made to measure, because every section can have its own height. In the configurator the switch is called "Sections: Individual". From two sections upwards, gaps, number of boards, foot and cap can be set section by section. A shelf becomes a staircase that follows the slope. What needs calculating is set out here, for the two walls such a shelf can stand against.

Two walls, two tasks

Under a slope there are two options. The gable wall runs across the roof: here the ceiling drops along the front of the shelf, and every section further out may be lower than the one before. The knee wall sits under the slope: here the ceiling is the same height across the whole width, but it rises towards the room. A shelf in front of it is as tall as the knee wall allows, and gains height with every centimetre of distance from the wall.

In both cases the roof pitch decides. The sum behind it is school maths: height difference equals distance times the tangent of the pitch. So that you do not have to do it yourself, the values for the common pitches are in the two tables below.

On the gable wall: the staircase profile

Along the gable wall each section is 75 centimetres wide. This is how much the ceiling drops over that distance:

The rule that goes with it: what counts is the headroom at the outer, lower end of each section. Measure there, not in the middle. And allow a few centimetres of air so the cap does not touch the slope.

An example with 35 degrees and 2.20 metres of headroom at the start of the shelf front: at the outer end of the first section there are still 1.67 metres, so it gets six boards and stands 155.5 centimetres tall. The second has 1.15 metres of air at its outer end and gets four boards, 102.5 centimetres. The third has 62 centimetres and gets two boards, 49 centimetres, a lowboard. Three sections, 2.25 metres of wall, and the zone under one metre, which does not count under the regulation at all, now carries books.

The heights come about like this: foot 10 centimetres, a gap of 35 at the bottom, 25 above it, each board 1.6, a cap of one centimetre on top. With two boards that makes 49 centimetres, with three 76, with four 102.5, with five 129, with six 155.5, with seven 182. Choose other gaps and you get other steps; the configurator shows the height of every section while you build.

On the knee wall: as tall as the knee wall, plus distance

If the shelf stands right against the knee wall, the knee wall is the limit. At 80 centimetres three boards fit, at 1.05 metres four, at 1.35 metres five. Move the shelf a little away from the wall and the permitted height grows, because the slope rises above it. How fast, the pitch tells you again:

A knee wall of 1.10 metres under a 40-degree roof: right against the wall, four boards fit. With 30 centimetres of distance there are 1.35 metres of air, and five boards fit. The strip behind is not lost, it takes boxes or the suitcase you rarely need. If you do not want the distance, use the half depth of 15 centimetres for the upper levels and keep the full 35 at the bottom, where there is room.

Anchoring, but not to the slope

Every KUUDU comes with a wall anchor that secures tall standing shelves against tipping. Under a slope the question is which wall. The answer: the gable wall or the knee wall, never the sloped surface itself. Behind its cladding usually lies the vapour barrier, and every drill hole through it is a weak point in the roof. Whether and how such a hole can be sealed is in the membrane manufacturer's installation instructions, not on a furniture page.

Knee walls are often stud walls with plasterboard, so not a wall an expansion plug can grip. Which anchors hold there and how to identify the wall type is in our article on wall types and anchors.
