Modular shelving feels like a contemporary idea, which is a compliment to how well its inventors aged. The concept is three generations old: the notion that furniture should be a system of parts on a grid, extended and rebuilt instead of replaced, was worked out between 1949 and the early 1980s by a handful of designers whose systems are still in production. Knowing that history is useful for a practical reason – the questions those designers answered are exactly the questions worth asking before buying any system today.
Four systems, four answers
In 1949, the Swedish designers Nisse and Kajsa Strinning won a competition run for the Bonnier publishing house with String: wire side ladders and shelves hooked between them, so light it almost drew itself onto the wall. It made shelving democratic – cheap to ship, simple to extend, visually silent. String has been in production ever since, and its answer to the system question was lightness.
In 1960, Dieter Rams designed the 606 Universal Shelving System for Vitsœ: aluminium E-tracks on the wall, shelves cantilevered into them, everything placeable and replaceable along a continuous rail. The 606 became the reference for the ethics of the idea – a company that encourages customers to buy less and extend later. Its answer was continuity: the system as a decades-long relationship rather than a purchase.
From 1963, the Swiss engineer Paul Schärer and architect Fritz Haller turned an architectural building system into furniture. USM Haller, patented in 1965 and later taken into the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, joins chromed tubes with ball joints into a strict spatial grid filled with lacquered steel panels. Its answer was rigour – furniture as small architecture, with the precision and the presence that implies.
And in 1982, Peter J. Lassen founded Montana in Denmark: lacquered modules in dozens of sizes and, today, more than forty colours, composed like paintings on a wall. Montana's answer was expression – the module as a pixel, the shelf as a composition.

What sixty years of systems teach a buyer
Strip away the aesthetics and the four classics agree on a short checklist, which doubles as a test for any newer system, ours included. First: is there a real grid? A system lives or dies by a dimension that repeats – String's ladder spacing, the 606 track pitch, USM's sphere-to-sphere module, Montana's unit sizes. If parts don't share a grid, extension is marketing. Second: are parts available separately, years later? Every one of the classics sells single shelves and single components today, for furniture bought decades ago. Third: does disassembly survive? A system that can be taken apart and rebuilt without damage is a different object from one assembled once. And fourth: does the company itself expect the furniture to outlive fashion? Continuous production since 1949, 1960, 1965 and 1982 is the strongest quality signal in the industry: longevity you can look up.
