IKEA Kallax Alternative: KUUDU Compared

  • 225 × 105 × 35 cm
  • Chêne FSC
  • Made in Germany
  • Configurable en 3D
En construction

Kallax became a standard for a reason: a clear square grid, low enough to work as a room divider, and easy to fill with boxes. Anyone searching for an alternative usually likes that logic and wants it in a different material, or wants a piece that survives the next move intact.

Asymmetric Double-Section Standing Shelf Unit - KUUDU Modular Shelving System - Oak

KUUDU works on the same idea of a repeating grid, built differently. The configuration shown here is three sections at 225 cm wide and about 105 cm high, in 35 cm depth. Boards are FSC-certified oak veneer over powder-coated aluminium, assembled without tools. Within each section you set the levels yourself, so the compartments follow what you actually store rather than a fixed square.

The practical difference shows up years later. Because every part sits on the same 75 cm grid, a shelf can be widened, shortened or split into two pieces with the components you already own. If you want a low, open piece that keeps working after the next flat, that is what the system is built for.

FAQ

Can KUUDU be used as a room divider like Kallax?

Yes. A freestanding configuration at around 105 cm height is open on both sides and works as a divider. Because the shelf is open rather than backed, it separates a room without closing it off.

Are there closed compartments, like Kallax inserts?

The bottom row can be built as closed oak boxes while the levels above stay open. You choose per section, so a piece can be closed where it hides things and open where it shows them.

What happens when I move?

The shelf comes apart into boards, rods and connectors without tools. In the new flat you rebuild it in another width or height from the same parts, and add a section only if you actually need one.
